I know, icky is not a recognizable word in the Webster Dictionary.  But, icky is one of the first words we teach our children.  You know…..when the diapers need to be changed.  Is there a better word to describe our current economic state?  The situation is smelly, dirty, unpleasant, vile, nauseating, disgusting, offensive, revolting, horrid, and down right nasty.

Most of us are tired of reading the newspaper and trade publications that impart the misfortune and calamity of our current economy.  However, we must recognize that we are in a cyclic downturn.  Eventually the economy will improve.  But in the meantime, we must modify our goals to withstand the immediate dynamics of a struggling industry.  To ignore the business environment of today may spiral us into a deeper abyss.

Golf Course Superintendent/PGA Professional Relationships
“Can’t We All Just Get Along”

I may be ostracized from the Superintendent ranks for this opinion but feel it is an important issue in our careers.  I am going to try to convince you that working constructively with your pro is a benefit to you.  It is my belief that if the superintendent and pro are on the same page concerning the direction of their club, the facility will be more likely to prosper.   I happen to be in a situation whereby the pro respects my contribution to the operation as much as I do his.  If you are not in that type of situation then it will be harder to see my point, but open your mind as you read on.

I was intrigued by a recent post on GCSAA’s “Forum” website.  The site allows members to express themselves on various issues ranging from turf, politics, and religion.  A member requested feedback on a very common issue that all superintendents have encountered…a golfer who was the last to play the course late one evening left a club on the 18th green.  The member, who knew he was the last to play, asked the superintendent if his staff had found the club the following morning.  Indeed, the course set-up employee had found the club and placed it in his utility cart.  When he went to retrieve the club, it was missing.  The golfer demanded the club be returned or replaced.

What would you do (WWYD)?  The forum feedback was equally divided on how the superintendent should handle the situation.  The responses included:
A. Fire the set-up guy – he took responsibility when he picked up the club.
B. The golfer lost it – it’s his responsibility.
C. It’s the superintendent’s liability – purchase him a new club.
D. It’s the facilities liability – replace the club.
E. Penalize the whole staff.

We are so excited to welcome Kissel/E&S Associates as our new Association Management Team.  They are going to do a great job managing and growing our chapter.  Who are these people you might ask?  The bulk of the work will be done by the three K’s –Kristin Crawford, Katy Post, and Kay Lemon.   Kristin Crawford will serve as the Executive Director of our group.  She will be the main contact and will oversee all affairs of the association.  Kristin is very affable and will be our liaison to other allied associations, UNL, and professional service providers.  As Jim Cummins commented after the interview “she seems like a real go-getter who could really extend our agenda with the Nebraska PGA section and Nebraska Golf Association.”  I agree that she will be able to gain us added credibility and increased visibility in the Nebraska golfing sector!  During the short time I have worked with her, she has proven to be very detail-oriented and prepared; no stone will go unturned with her at the helm.  Katy Post will handle communications and membership services which includes maintaining the member database, membership correspondence (meeting notices, announcements, etc), and managing the web site.  Kay Lemon will be charged with the financial administration of the association including all reports and advertising accounts. This team of ladies is headed by Gordon Kissel, managing partner, who has extensive legislative and governmental lobbying experience.  Gordon is well connected within the Lincoln and statewide community and adds his clout and experience to the team and as Kristin stated before their interview “keeps his thumb on me!”

Spring is always a time of awakening and rejuvenation--flowers bloom, trees bud, grass sprouts new shoots. And we “go back to work” with a sense of urgency and anticipation for a better season than last. This season, however, will be met with much hand-wringing and uncertainty over the economic pressures put on all of us. Despite that, most superintendents with whom I have talked are anxious to see what lies ahead— as if they will really bear down to make the best of an 'iffy' economic situation.
