Spring is always a time of awakening and rejuvenation--flowers bloom, trees bud, grass sprouts new shoots. And we “go back to work” with a sense of urgency and anticipation for a better season than last. This season, however, will be met with much hand-wringing and uncertainty over the economic pressures put on all of us. Greetings! I had already completed a Western Waves column when President Mahar called to visit about chapter affairs. The subject of employing a new Executive Director dominated our conversation. We both expressed our ideas on selecting a successful candidate to lead our chapter forward. It’s obvious we all have our opinions but we agree in the end result…..a stronger, more unified chapter that serves the needs of our membership and promotes and represents the ideals of our profession in an ever changing environment.

GCSAA Chapter Liaison Jim Cummins is leaving us – kind of. Cummins, who has been instrumental in advancing several chapters, including the Nebraska GCSA, recently assumed an account manager position in GCSAA’s corporate sales and marketing department. Jim, who previously worked in golf industry sales, will be using his expertise to secure funds and sponsorships so that GCSAA members can continue to receive the programs and services that are vital to our careers and the success of our facilities. Chapters will still receive administrative support through the association’s Membership Department and other staff members who provide expertise for specific programs such as government relations and advocacy, communications, fundraising, etc.

At GCSAA, we are fortunate to have the support of the partners who have invested in our Partner Recognition Program (PRP). Because of this support, we are able to provide a variety of programs such as the Sponsored Membership Program for Assistant Superintendents. Through this program, the PRP partners are sponsoring 300 new GCSAA Assistant Superintendent memberships in 2008. Eligible individuals are not current GCSAA members and are currently employed as an Assistant Superintendent.
